Higgledy Piggledy Jazz at Abbotsholme School
I had no idea what I was in for as I entered the super little theatre at Abbotsholme School, but the place was heaving, and as soon as the two flying pigs Pinky and Stinky (Emma Woods and Jemma Butcher) poked their heads through the curtains I knew I was in for a treat.
Higgledy Piggledy Jazz is a musical show built around original songs by the pianist and composer Elena Cobb. It tells the story of Molly Spencer’s quest for happiness, guided by a collection of helpful characters such as Super Duck and Doctor Nerdy Cat.
The cast, drawn from the Young Ashbourne Singers, under the direction of Linda Perry Smith gave a gutsy, enthusiastic and talented performance. Jessica Duckworth as Molly, Milla Kalling-Smith as Cobby Booby the bear, Bethany Hughes as Mrs. Van Der Blond, Robert Loud as Super Duck, and Sam Lawson as Doctor Nerdy Cat distinguished themselves as all-round entertainers, and the ensemble numbers involving the whole cast threatened to raise the roof!
The show was first performed as part of the Ashbourne Festival, and was back by popular demand. Something as good as this will surely be aired again: if you get the chance to see it, take the whole family along. I shan’t miss it!
